💌 Love Letters | Issue 9: When You’re Running on Empty — Beyond Self-Care

Dear Beautiful Soul,
There’s a subtle, often overlooked place where many of us find ourselves — not just tired or stressed, but truly running on empty. This isn’t the kind of exhaustion you can fix with a bubble bath or a weekend off. It’s deeper than that.
It’s the sense that the well you draw from — your inner reserve of energy, clarity, and calm — feels dry. You might still be ticking off the self-care checklist, but inside, something’s missing. That inner resource, the place where you turn to refill your spirit, feels faint or distant.
This isn’t about doing more self-care rituals or pushing harder to “fix” your exhaustion. It’s about recognizing when the container you’ve been pouring from needs more than surface attention. It needs nourishment at the roots — the quiet, unseen places inside you that hold your strength and resilience.
When you’re running on empty, it’s a signal to slow down not just your body, but your mind and spirit. To stop asking yourself “What do I need to do next?” and instead ask, “Where am I feeling disconnected from myself?”
How to Know When You’re Disconnected from Yourself
Here are some signs you might be out of touch with your inner self:
-
Feeling numb, blank, or “checked out” — like you’re going through motions without real presence.
-
Difficulty identifying what you’re feeling — emotions feel vague, confusing, or distant.
-
A sense of emptiness or restlessness — a hollow feeling or craving for something undefined.
-
Chronic overwhelm or exhaustion — feeling drained even after rest or self-care.
-
Impulsive decisions or acting on autopilot — doing things without really thinking or feeling aligned.
-
Losing interest or joy in things that used to matter — hobbies, relationships, or passions feel muted.
-
Physical symptoms without clear cause — tension, headaches, stomach aches tied to emotional disconnection.
-
Struggling to set or maintain boundaries — feeling pulled in directions that don’t honor your needs.
-
Difficulty trusting your intuition or inner guidance — second-guessing yourself often.
-
A persistent inner critic or self-judgment — harsh thoughts that drown out your own voice.
This is the moment for radical listening — not just to your to-do list or your physical tiredness — but to your whole being, to the parts of you that are holding tension, disappointment, or overwhelm without language, to the parts that might feel unseen or unheard.
Self-care isn’t just bubble baths or to-do lists; it’s the commitment to be present with your deeper needs — even when that feels hard or confusing. It’s learning to trust that your inner well can refill itself, but only if you give it permission to be quiet, messy, or empty sometimes.
🌿 Reflection Questions:
-
How do I usually notice when I’m running on empty?
-
What feelings or sensations in my body alert me that my inner well is low?
-
Where do I feel disconnected from myself right now?
-
What would it look like to give myself permission to simply be without expectation?
-
How can I hold space for the parts of me that feel overwhelmed or unseen?
💖 So this is a love letter to your running-on-empty self — to the part of you that feels drained, stretched thin, and maybe invisible.
It’s a love letter to the courage it takes to keep going even when your spirit whispers for rest.
It’s a love letter to the part of you that deserves compassion, patience, and gentlest care — especially from yourself.
It’s a love letter to the sacred space where you can simply be, without expectation or judgment — where your inner well can begin to fill again, slowly and surely.
🌸 This Week’s Practice: Radical Presence
Set aside 5–10 minutes each day to sit quietly with yourself. No agenda, no to-do’s. Just notice what’s present in your body and mind. If feelings or thoughts arise, welcome them without judgment. Let this be a time to reconnect with your inner world, exactly as it is.
With love and deep respect,
Em
